The AI is also improved along with classes of enemies. Failing to win a battle causes the enemy faction to attack one of your cities (expect to be approached by a courier after some in-game days for instructions what to do next). Battle odds depend on the number of soldiers killed previously (so-called "Murder Mayhem score").
